Newsweek recently released a list of the world’s twenty most dangerous countries for U.S. travelers obtained in large measure from travel advisories on the State Department website. In case you missed the article, the destinations named are: Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Iraq, Libya, Mali, North Korea, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria, Yemen, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritania, Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sudan, Turkey, and Venezuela.
Okay, so, these are destinations are probably not at the top of your “bucket list”. That does not mean your travel destination is without risk.
According to one source, each year, there are at least 15,000 to 20,000 kidnappings across the globe. These are the reported incidents; best estimates are that eighty percent of kidnappings are unreported.
Total ransom payment estimates range from $1.5 to $1.8 billion per year. The majority of kidnappings of Americans for ransom take place in Mexico, Columbia and other Central/South American countries, the Middle East and parts of Africa. Kidnappers don’t discriminate. Tourists, journalists, aid workers, wealthy business persons, all are targets.
Virtual kidnappings are also on the rise. Virtual kidnapping is defined as a practice “whereby kidnappers extract ransom by falsely claiming to have abducted a loved one.”
Nextgov.com recently published findings from a 2018 survey reporting that most employees are unaware of common security threats while traveling. Negligent actions by employees caused sixty four percent of all insider threat incidents in the past twelve months (Ponemon Institute). Individual security is threatened in like manner.
